06 Jul Veterinarians exempt from new DEA license renewal requirement
A new CE requirement for DEA license renewal may be causing Colorado veterinarians some confusion.
On December 29, 2022, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 enacted a new one-time, eight-hour training requirement for all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. Beginning on June 27, 2023, practitioners will be required to check a box on their online DEA registration form—regardless of whether a registrant is completing their initial registration application or renewing their registration—affirming that they have completed the new training requirement.
This new requirement does not apply to veterinarians; veterinarians who are registering or renewing their DEA registration should check the box on the DEA application in order to continue on in the registration process, according to the DEA. The box affirms that registrants have “read and understood” the information about the training requirement.

Note: This is a CE requirement for a DEA license, not your Colorado veterinary license. Veterinarians must still complete CE on substance use prevention training each renewal cycle for their Colorado veterinary license.
