African swine fever inches closer to U.S.; State Veterinarian’s Office to host webinars

An African swine fever outbreak in hogs just off the U.S. coast in the Dominican Republic has U.S. officials escalating efforts to make sure the virus does not reach the U.S. pork industry.
ASF has been circulating in Asia and parts of Europe for the past several years. This detection of ASF in the Dominican Republic marks the first detection in the Western hemisphere in nearly 40 years. ASF is not a threat to human health, cannot be transmitted from pigs to humans, and it is not a food safety issue.
The State Veterinarian’s Office will be hosting two webinars the week of August 16 to provide information and updates on the virus.
