Join CVMA Chapter 2 for a virtual evening of lymphoma CE with Douglas H. Thamm, VMD, DACVIM (oncology) from Colorado State University.

Lymphoma is a commonly encountered disease in animals. While conventional chemotherapy has the potential to induce remission and improve quality of life, relapse is common and novel treatments are needed to continue to improve outcome. This review will discuss recent modifications to conventional standard of care therapy for canine and feline lymphoma that can be immediately implemented, as well as cutting-edge immunotherapy and small molecule-based approaches that are in varying stages of regulatory approval.

Douglas H. Thamm, VMD, DACVIM (oncology)

Dr. Thamm is the Barbara Cox Anthony Professor of Oncology and Director of Clinical Research at the Colorado State University Flint Animal Cancer Center. He is also a member of the Developmental Therapeutics Section of the University of Colorado Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Cell and Molecular Biology Graduate Program at Colorado State University. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and 20 book chapters in veterinary and basic cancer research, is Co-Editor for the most recent edition of the textbook Withrow and MacEwen’s Small Animal Clinical Oncology, and is Co-Editor-In-Chief of the journal Veterinary and Comparative Oncology.  His clinical and research interests include novel targeted therapies for animal and human cancer and ways to integrate these therapies with existing treatment.

Sam Franklin, MS, DVM, PhD

Dr. Franklin is originally from Arlington, Virginia and obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and a Master of Science degree from the University of Maryland in ecology before moving to Colorado to pursue veterinary studies. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree cum laude from Colorado State University in 2007 followed by an internship at the University of Pennsylvania. He then moved to the University of Missouri to complete a small animal surgical residency and a PhD investigating the use of stem cells and bioabsorbable materials for replacing arthritic canine hips. Following the residency and PhD he spent one year in private practice in upstate New York before becoming an assistant professor of orthopedics and sports medicine at the University of Georgia. At the University of Georgia he pursued his interests in minimally invasive orthopedic surgery, regenerative medicine, use of orthobiologics such as platelet-rich plasma and stem cells, and musculoskeletal diagnostic imaging. He has published over 38 peer-reviewed journal articles, seven book chapters, and provided over 60 presentations at national and international veterinary meetings. He is a board-certified diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and he is an ACVS Founding Fellow in the field of Minimally Invasive Orthopedic Surgery.

Kenneth Lee, DVM, DAVDC

Dr. Kenneth Lee is a board-certified veterinary dentist with more than 30 years of clinical experience in small animal medicine, surgery and dentistry. He received his bachelor’s in biochemistry and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Missouri. Dr. Lee was co-owner of a busy AAHA –certified small animal practice, Deer Creek Animal Hospital (DCAH) in Littleton, Colorado since 1999. He also ran the veterinary student externship program for DCAH for over 20 years. DCAH was one of fourteen co-founding hospitals across the country to form Companion Animal Practices North America (CAPNA) Inc. in 2010. Over the next five years through acquisitions and mergers CAPNA grew to 55 hospitals. The purpose of delivering the highest quality medical care, continual education and finest experience to clients was CAPNA’s objectives. During this time Dr. Lee was in charge of expanding and increasing the quality of veterinary dentistry through numerous veterinary dental training courses, lectures and wet labs given throughout the country to CAPNA veterinarians. CAPNA sold to VCA in 2016 and Dr. Lee has continued to develop a large and loyal following of referring clinics and pet owners in the greater Denver area working at DCAH-VCA.

In addition, he has taught numerous dental courses to veterinarians and veterinary students at the Veterinary Dental Forum national meeting and the University of Missouri Veterinary College. Dr. Lee continues to volunteer his time with the Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation. He has provided pro-bono dental care to many exotic species including lions, tigers, bears and primates at institutions including the Denver Zoo and The Wild Animal Sanctuary.

Dr. Lee is a diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College where he has served on the college’s credential committee. He is a member of the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry, and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
